Following on their success at Millennium Copthorne Hotel, Slough and Copthorne Merry Hill, Dudley, Andrews Water Heaters scored a hat trick when their Supa-Flo appliances were selected for the Millennium Madejski Hotel, Reading. The hotel is situated adjacent to the home of Reading FC and also the London Irish Rugby Club and is part of the impressive Madejski Stadium complex, in which, coincidentally, Andrews water heaters are also installed. This four star 140 bedroom hotel has two restaurants, a bar, health club, gym and spar pool with dedicated shower facilities. ‘The high demand for these leisure amenities peaks in early morning and early evening, which are also peak times for other guests taking showers in their rooms. A further peak period follows, with high volumes of water being drawn off for food preparation, wash-down and washing up in the cafe and main restaurant kitchens. NG Bailey & Co. Ltd., M&E contractors for this project, designed the services to cater for this pattern of high volume hot water usage by the energy efficient means of separating the space heating and hot water load and centralising hot water production. This saves the cost of running a boiler large enough to cater for both loads when only hot water is required which can significantly reduce energy consumption, particularly during summer months. Instead, a constant supply of domestic hot water is generated by direct gas-fired, fast recovery, water heaters. These are linked to buffer storage vessels, which eliminate warm-up time and ensure immediate availability of hot water, even at maximum peak demand. The two Supa-Flo R2122ET water heaters installed each provide a heat output of 425kW and hot water recovery of 8229 litres/hr (through a temperature rise of 4400). Instead of the standard EM control, these models have been supplied with the optional ET thermostatic 3-step modulating burner control which is accurate from +3oC/-6oC and therefore ideal for service hot water functions. It can also facilitate interface with the hotel’s building energy management system. The Supa-Flo is designed to achieve high efficiency and low emissions whether running at full or part load. In fact the way in which the burner operates, employing simultaneous ratio modulation of both gas and primary air, ensures optimum efficiency occurs under the part load conditions that apply for much of the time. The plant room in which the Supa-Flo water heaters are located is adjacent to offices and corridors so the low noise levels afforded by these units was an important factor in meeting the specification criteria. In order to allow flue discharger at low level these water heaters had to be capable of installation with a fan dilution system. Furthermore, access limitations to the plant room required Andrews’s technical expertise in delivering the appliances as suitably sized components and re-assembling them on site.
