Bringing coherence, fresh ideas and professionalism to every project, Revo Group consistently achieves outstanding leisure centre and gymnasium fit-outs and refurbishments on time and on budget. Working closely with the client, the Revo team is committed to providing stress-free, stylish and practical solutions from the initial design and specification to installation on site.
Leisure centre fit-outs and refurbishments require a high level of finish and co-ordination between different trades, skills sets and suppliers. Revo has delivered fully refurbished gyms and outstanding studio spaces and works to evolve and meet client aspirations, collaborating to achieve the required look and feel of the facilities. The finished scheme may embrace everything from the latest in cutting-edge colour change lighting to arresting wall sized photography, with the scope of works including ceilings, floors, mirrors, decorations, electrics, AV and bespoke graphic screens.
In order to minimise downtime and disruption, work within leisure centres and gyms must often be undertaken within incredibly tight timescales. Revo is well used to this and understands the need to match speed and efficiency with the highest standards of quality and service.
Philip Basford, Managing Director of Revo, comments: “Attention to detail is the key with every project Revo undertakes, but is even more crucial in the case of gym and leisure centre refurbishments. These projects call for a unique understanding of the relationship between the aspirations of the end user and considerations such as practicality, durability and safety. We know that getting this right is essential to the long term operation of the facilities and that quality of design, workmanship and materials is vital at every stage.”
Case study – Larkfield and Angel Leisure Centres
The gyms and studios at the Larkfield and Angel Leisure Centres in Aylesford and Tonbridge, Kent, are owned and managed by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and form an important community focus in terms of wellbeing. They also provide key revenue streams to support the other important elements of the centres so, when it came to the gym fit-out and the refurbishment of the facilities, speed, quality and budget were key prerequisites. The refurbishment of the two sites, which together total some 850 m2, was required because the council realised that they needed to be updated both in appearance and function. The Council commissioned Gymetrics to audit both sites to evaluate kit usage percentages and, based on the resultant research, the numbers and types of equipment were changed along with the inclusion of a new functional fitness area.
Revo Group won the contract to undertake the leisure fit-out having partnered Technogym, the wellness company, in a six-company tender process. Together, the companies produced designs, specifications and prices which succeeded in meeting the client’s aspirations for the look and feel of the facilities within the 1980’s buildings, while also falling well within the desired budget.
Revo’s brief was to create inclusive motivating room sets in which users could find comfortable and semi-private spaces in which to progress their fitness. Revo created a suite of inspirational large scale graphics which were then designed to form key elements in print and new media collateral so that the customer journey starts with web and print and continues throughout the gym and studios.
Despite the very narrow window of opportunity for the works to be carried out, Revo liaised closely with the client and succeeded in delivering two fully refurbished gyms and an awesome studio in just nine days. The finished spaces included the latest in cutting-edge colour change lighting and arresting wall-sized photography that heightens the aspirational and lifestyle qualities of the facilities.
Brian Brown of Revo Group comments, “The key challenges included a four-day shutdown of the gyms and a short procurement time from final council sign-off to gym shutdown. We designed many of the elements within the gym to be manufactured off-site and assembled in the gym cutting down greatly on installation time. Ceiling features were created in Gooding aluminium preformed profiles and hung in place rather like an exhibition stand build but designed for longevity. We selected materials and fitting that were ex-stock and readily available. We work in many sectors in both design and build which gives us a huge library of suppliers enabling great value, scope and quality.”
The LED tape colour change lighting is used in the ceiling of the studio to wash out and down the walls. It also makes the central section of lowered ceiling look like its floating which is an amazing effect.
Brian Brown, Creative Director of Revo, continues “The idea is that, along with two other types of lights used, we can create scenes appropriate to different types of classes and, indeed, different events within a class such as warm-up and warm-down in a spin class, for instance. When the LED’s are used on their own, the studio atmosphere then changes completely phasing through colours very slowly or strobing quickly to give more energy to a class. We have experience in designing events and exhibitions involving audio and sound and this is an area of gym and studio design where we can bring operators another USP whilst staying within budget. We design and build our projects from a deep foundation of understanding of their function developed through a close relationship with the client so our results are nearly always insightful and successful.”
Martin Guyton, Leisure Contracts Manager of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, comments “Revo Group has just completed the successful refurbishment project at Lifestyles. The professional approach adopted by Revo, not to mention the completion within exceptionally tight timescales to a very high standard, is testament to the company’s prowess in the business.”
Brian Brown adds “Now that the gym is fully operational, the functional area seems to be an activity hub for gym users and a shop window for PT and inductions. On revisiting the site, we were approached by a gym user who said that this area had changed his way of working out significantly and added more interest and variety. Revo has also completed the University of Kent Sports Centre which opens in May with several functional zones throughout the three gym zones one of which is based solely on body weight and gravity.”
