It is easy to forget the role that the Highbury stadium played in the development of top flight football over its 93 year history until 2006, when Arsenal moved to their new bespoke 60,000 seat Emirates stadium, this included hosting the first international England game in 1920.
Today if you visit the area, you will see the site has been transformed into tastefully developed apartment buildings that have managed to retain many of the original - including art deco - features as well as maintaining a sense of the actual stadium with the pitch now transformed into a garden area.
The sensitivity of the re-design didn’t stop there as the whole project bears the hallmark of sustainable design throughout all its aspects. Integral to the solution M&E consultants Hoare Lea and M&E contractors NG Bailey worked with relevant expert industry partners to ensure that the final outcome met all the ambitious efficiency aims that were so important to the scheme, this included the incorporation of many Grundfos pumps.
The pumping systems aspect of the sustainable solution drew heavily from the extensive portfolio of variable speed pumps that Grundfos can offer to this market and comprised of a wide range of products that included Hydro MPC-E booster sets, members of the TP(E)D range of in-line pumps, Grundfos AnTi-Shock pressure valves as well as many ancillary items.
With its great design and planning, this new development ticks many boxes for football as well as environmental supporters. Today Highbury Square residents are the first people to live in a sports stadium conversion that has cleverly combined an historic past with a green future.
